Our network provider's DNS servers, which provide a "directory" service to find our hosted websites, were attacked by a DDOS (distributed denial-of-service) attack early this morning.  The servers were inaccessible due to the attack for several hours and came back online very early this morning.  We still are not sure of the time frame, but it appears it was around 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. give or take a few minutes.

All sites are 100% functional and did not go down, this was a DNS problem at our provider network, caused by an attack.

SpinRiteI've used SpinRite on client computers, but this is the first time I've used it on my own computer to recover.  It ran for 12 hours, finding two bad sectors.  It recovered the first completely, and the second partially.  This is what sets SpinRite apart from other disk recovery programs - it is capable of recovering partial sectors (some of the data) instead of just taking the easy way out and giving up.  Often, the partially recovered data is enough - it contains the data actually used in the sector.

I got the dreaded BSOD this afternoon, on my two-month-old Acer netbook with Windows XP.  I am constantly amazed at how fragile Windows is, after being a daily Linux user since 2001, and a Mac user since 2003.  I've never had even close to the same problems on LInux or Mac as I have experienced on Windows.  Between how fragile it is, and having to fend of viruses, worms, spyware, etc. it is a real battle to use it.  None of that applies to Linux or Mac OS X.

"The real power of Harley-Davidson is the power to market to consumers who love the product. Harley-Davidsons's President and CEO, Richard Teerlink says the bike represents to America, "the adventurous pioneer spirit, the wild west, having your own horse, and going where you want to go - the motorcycle takes on some attributes of the iron horse. It suggests personal freedom and independence" (Executive Excellence 6). Brand loyalty for Harley-Davidson is emotional. They are considered more than motorcycles-they are legends. It is an American icon brand. The Harley-Davidson symbol is based on a pattern of associations that include the American flag and the eagle; reflective of the passion and freedom Americans enjoy

Why should I design a web site during a struggling economy? PDF Print

"So maybe a recession is a good time to start a startup. It's hard to say whether advantages like lack of competition outweigh disadvantages like reluctant investors. But it doesn't matter much either way. It's the people that matter. And for a given set of people working on a given technology, the time to act is always now. "

Paul Graham on Why to Start a Startup in a Bad Economy
